When It Is Defrost and When It Is a Problem

Heat pumps confuse a lot of owners because they do things a furnace never does. On a cold, wet morning the outdoor coil collects frost. The unit responds by switching briefly into a defrost mode: the outdoor fan stops, the coil warms, and a plume of vapor may rise off the cabinet with a whoosh as the valve shifts. A few minutes later it returns to heating. That is the system working as designed. Problems look different. Ice that keeps building until the coil is solid. Air from the registers that stays cool in heating mode. A unit stuck in cooling when you want heat, which often points to the reversing valve or its control. Auxiliary heat, usually electric strips in the air handler, that runs much of the day. Backup heat is meant for cold snaps and defrost periods, and when it runs constantly the power bill climbs fast. Short cycling hits heat pumps too, for the same reasons it hits air conditioners: oversizing, airflow and refrigerant charge. Some homes run dual fuel, with a gas furnace that takes over below a set outdoor temperature. If the changeover point or the controls are wrong, the system leans on the wrong source. Service covers repair, replacement and new heat pump installs, each sized and tested in both heating and cooling.

Heat Pump Work Covered

Repairs and installs for both halves of the job.

  • Defrost faults

Boards, sensors and settings checked when ice builds and stays.

  • Reversing valve issues

A unit stuck in heating or cooling gets its valve and controls tested.

  • Aux heat running too much

Heat strips, staging and thermostat settings reviewed so backup heat only runs when it should.

  • Dual-fuel setup

Changeover temperature and controls between heat pump and furnace corrected.

  • Short cycling and leaks

Sizing, airflow, charge and the indoor drain checked, the same as on any air conditioner.

  • New heat pumps

Replacements and installs sized by load calculation and tested in both modes.

What the Visit Covers

  1. Hear the pattern

Ice, cool air, constant backup heat or noise, and which season brings it out.

  2. Run both modes

Heating and cooling operated and measured, defrost forced and observed, findings explained with a price.

  3. Confirm the fix

After repair or install, the unit switches between modes and runs steady in each.

Why Heat Pump Owners Ask for Us

  • Clear answers on defrost

You will know whether that vapor cloud is normal before anyone suggests a repair.

  • Both seasons checked

A cooling complaint in summer still gets a look at heating readiness, and the reverse.

  • Sizing that fits

Replacement heat pumps are matched to the load so they do not short cycle.

  • Heating and cooling measured
  • Defrost observed
  • Dual fuel set correctly
  • Cost before work

Backup Heat Running All Day?

Constant aux heat, ice that will not melt or cool air in heating mode all deserve a look. Describe it and a technician will explain what is normal and what is not.
